AS House

San Ramón, Alajuel, Costa Rica 2017 – 2019

This project stems from an explicit request from the client to preserve and protect a previously planted Jacaranda tree in the center of the property. For this reason the idea arises of developing a house with a central courtyard and that the protagonist is always the tree.

Under this premise, said central patio was completely open and covered with glass in order to integrate the patio into the entire house. The result is that all the spaces in the house are connected to the patio, achieving a feeling of spaciousness and taking advantage of the patio as natural lighting for the entire house.

The central patio being the heart of the house, it was thought of as a large fireplace monitor to prevent the interior from heating up. The entire skin of said monitor is composed of beehive-type bricks with perforations inclined at 30 degrees, preventing rain from penetrating the interior space and allowing natural ventilation. The project has a bio-climatic design where the ventilated facades allow natural air circulation, keeping the house cool throughout the year without the need for air conditioning.

Water is a fundamental element in this project, the main entrance opens to the visitor with a mirror of water and invites him to enter to continue with the visual auction towards the tree in the central patio, which is surrounded by a water source. generating an environment of peace purified by the sound of water. Through a system of sliding glass doors that are hidden between the concrete walls, the central patio, the social area, and the exterior are brought together in a single space.
