Occidental Wellness Hospital and Retreat

Alajuela, Costa Rica 2019 – 2020

The Occidental Wellness Hospital & Retreat wants to transform the concept of health treatment into a holistic and humanized vision of patients. Architecture becomes a protagonist promoting the creation of sensory spaces and a direct connection with nature, both outside and inside buildings, it must focus on the quality of life, integral health and well-being of patients rather than on the simple approach to create spaces for the treatment of diseases.

Studies from the Center of Health Design show that architecture can reduce treatment costs, reducing the length of stay, the use of compensatory medications and nursing work times per patient, among other savings directly influenced by the design, it also means a higher patient satisfaction, and a better quality perception index. (Guelli, 2013) On the other hand, these studies confirm that exposure to sunlight, natural ventilation and direct or indirect contact with nature, increases up to almost 30% in a patient’s recovery time.

This project aims to be revolutionary, changing the conception and image of what we know as a hospital. A green hospital, open to nature, that breathes, that grows with the trees, that blends in with the new natural environment. A hospital from Costa Rica to the world.
