Refugio House
Coronado, San José, Costa Rica 2013 – 2014
Located in the cold and windy mountains of Las Nubes de Coronado, the project was born as a leisure house with spectacular views of the Central Valley and the Braulio Carrillo National Park. The steep terrain layout of the terrain suggested dividing the program into two main spaces, the first level half-buried into the land where the social area and a large room are located, and a second level that includes the main room.
That first level is covered by a large green roof slab that protects and mimics that large concrete block within the mountain, the second level was designed as a reinterpretation of vernacular architecture. Wooden houses with gabled roofs and Victorian air are present throughout the area. The project has that wooden volume with an open façade and a balcony taking advantage of the 180-degree view of the Braulio Carrillo National Park.
